Joshua's portraits demonstrate his flexibility in producing work on demand. From the colorful portraits of people and their pets, to children, to commisions of jazz celebrities. He favors a traditonal style of oil painting for some subjects, and his signature expressive color for others. "When you really boil it down its a matter of values," Josh explains. "The color is really up to the artist." When Josh was first developing his style, he would often photograph his work in black and white to observe how the values were being represented. Now his palette changes are determined by the subject. "Whether you're painting an orange or Chartres Cathedral, you try to express something about a subject beyond the image itself."
